US embargo on Cuba for 60 years: 'Heartbreaking murder'

The Latin American News Agency recently published an article pointing out that the US blockade is more destructive than bullets and shells, and that the US's indifference to the plight of the Cuban people is tantamount to "heartbreaking murder". The Cuban foreign minister said recently that Cuba intends to submit a draft resolution requesting the United States to end the embargo against Cuba to the UN General Assembly for the 30th time in November.

The economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States on Cuba since 1962 has continued to this day, bringing huge economic losses and severe humanitarian disasters to Cuba over the past 60 years. Cuban Foreign Minister Rodriguez said at a press conference recently that Cuba intends to submit a draft resolution requesting the United States to end the embargo against Cuba (hereinafter referred to as the draft resolution) to the UN General Assembly for the 30th time in November.

It is tantamount to "heartbreaking murder"

"The U.S. government always argues that the sanctions against Cuba are only aimed at the government, not the people, but every Cuban family has a personal feeling for the harm caused by the U.S. blockade." The 62-year-old Cuban doctor Sonia Mendes said.

From fuel, food, daily necessities to medicines, the U.S. sanctions and blockade against Cuba cover almost everything, resulting in a long-term severe shortage of supplies in Cuba and the people's life is difficult. "The United States even obstructed Cuba's access to raw materials for vaccine production during the new crown epidemic, which is tantamount to a crime," Mendes said.

The Latin American News Agency recently published an article stating that the U.S. blockade is more destructive than bullets and artillery shells, and "is a large-scale, flagrant and unacceptable violation of the human rights of the Cuban people." America's indifference to the plight of the Cuban people amounts to "heartbreaking murder."

According to Cuban official statistics, calculated at current US dollar prices, the U.S. embargo has caused cumulative losses of more than 154.2 billion U.S. dollars in Cuba over the past 60 years. Among them, only from August last year to February this year, the economic loss caused by the US embargo to Cuba reached 3.8 billion US dollars, which was the highest economic loss in the same period before.

The specter of the "Monroe Doctrine" still haunts

In 1823, then US President James Monroe issued the so-called "Monroe Declaration", declaring that "America is the America of the Americans". For a long time, the United States has adhered to the "Monroe Doctrine" and regarded Latin America as its "backyard", forcing Latin American countries to act according to the will of the United States through power intervention, coercion and inducement.

During the Monroe presidency, Secretary of State John Quincy Adams regarded Cuba, which was still a Spanish colony at the time, as a "natural appendage" of the United States, and proposed the so-called "ripe fruit policy", that is, when the time was right, the Cuban island would be annexed "as if it were being The fruit that the wind blows." In 1898, the United States occupied Cuba after its victory over Spain. In 1959, under the leadership of Fidel Castro, the Cuban people overthrew the Batista dictatorship and established a revolutionary government. Since then, the United States has adopted a hostile policy towards Cuba.

In 1961, the United States announced the severance of diplomatic relations with Cuba, and began to impose an economic and financial embargo and trade embargo on Cuba the following year. The two countries resumed diplomatic relations in 2015, but the U.S. embargo on Cuba has not been fully lifted. After the Trump administration came to power in 2017, the United States once again imposed sanctions on Cuba. Since the Biden administration came to power in January last year, it has twice extended the validity period of the "Trading with the Enemy Act", which is the legal basis for the embargo and embargo against Cuba.

In June this year, the United States refused to invite the leaders of Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela to participate in the ninth Summit of the Americas held in the United States. This move was widely criticized and protested by Latin American countries. Cuban President Diaz-Canel pointed out that under the manipulation of the US, the Summit of the Americas regained the "Monroe Doctrine", which is a "performance with neo-colonialism".

Favio Fernandez, a professor at the Department of History and Philosophy of the University of Havana in Cuba, said that Cuba seeks an independent development path, and the United States regards this as a challenge to its hegemony, so it uses economic blockade and other means to punish Cuba. The hegemonic thinking and interventionist behavior of the United States have never undergone fundamental changes due to the changing times.

  Hegemony is unpopular

. "People please rise up and eliminate sanctions!" Thousands of demonstrators chanted slogans outside the Ninth Summit of the Americas, protesting the continuation of the US government's sanctions policy against Cuba and other American countries.

Daniel Kovalik, a visiting law professor at the University of Pittsburgh in the United States, pointed out that the United States has never treated Latin American countries equally and seems to take it for granted that it has unambiguous influence in Latin America. Some Latin American countries have long been dissatisfied with this. The embarrassing situation of this summit in the Americas reflects the further decline of the influence of the United States in the Western Hemisphere, highlighting the unpopularity of hegemony.

The Cuban government plans to submit a draft resolution to the UN General Assembly in November this year. And since 1992, the UN General Assembly has adopted draft resolutions submitted by Cuba with an overwhelming majority for 29 consecutive times. Rodriguez pointed out that facts have proved that the U.S. embargo policy against Cuba will only isolate the U.S. and lose its reputation.

Miguel Cruz, a Cuban middle school teacher, said that the voting results of the UN General Assembly over the years are the most powerful proof that the international community generally opposes US hegemony. "Cubans have the right to get rid of the shackles of US sanctions, and the world also has the right to break the power of the United States."
