Mysterious "ghost island": can "walk" and "eat boats"

All kinds of weird phenomena make Sable Island in the North Atlantic Ocean a nightmare for sailors, so it is called "Shipwreck Island", "Ghost Island" and "Atlantic Cemetery". Some people suspect that the island is alive and may be an alien monster! why does it move? Why are there so many shipwrecks there? In the early morning of August 1593, the British expedition ships "Joy" and "Squirrel" were sailing on the Atlantic Ocean

  .

The two ships were part of Sir Humphrey Gilbert's Expeditionary Fleet of England, which was returning to England from the North American continent.

Captain Clark obeyed Sir Gilbert's order and drove the "Joy" close to Sable Island. However, they never thought that this seemingly ordinary island actually had hidden murderous intentions. Just as they approached that island, the "Joy" ran aground! To make matters worse, everyone found that the stranded ship began to sink, and the sinking speed was getting faster and faster, as if being sucked into and swallowed by a large monster.

Captain Clark ordered the sailors to quickly lower the lifeboats and escape the sinking "Joy" as soon as possible. But the ship sank so fast that in the end, among the 102 crew members, only 17 including the captain managed to escape, and the rest and all the supplies on board were swallowed by the quicksand of Sable Island. The "Squirrel" was able to escape due to its shallow draft.

After that, Sable Island seems to have started a crazy "boat eating" mode. From the sinking of the "Joy" to the shipwreck that occurred on Sable Island in 1947, there were only more than 350 recorded incidents, with an average of at least one incident per year. In one of the worst shipwrecks, more than 500 people lost their lives. And a ship about 100 meters long and weighing 5,000 tons can be completely "eaten" by Sable Island within two or three months.

  Deadly fog and "invisibility"

Sable Island is located on the east coast of Nova Scotia, Canada, and looks like an ordinary island. So why do ships run aground and sink on this island so often?

The dense fog rolling over the sea is one of the important reasons. According to records, the island has clear weather only in July in a year, and the island is often hidden in fog at other times, which is related to its location. Not far from Sable Island, the Labrador Current and the Gulf Stream meet, and the two currents have different densities, so instead of peacefully merging with each other, they collide. Just as low-pressure and high-pressure air masses in the atmosphere meet, these ocean currents form "fronts," or boundaries.

In addition, with the help of waves, Sable Island is also good at "invisibility". The highest altitude of Sable Island is only 34 meters. There are only some low sand dunes on the island. Standing on the beach on one side of the island, you can almost completely see the beach on the other side. When the waves are rolling and visibility is not very good, the island is almost hidden from the waves.

It is precisely because of the superb "invisibility" of Sable Island that many ships will be "bitten" by it accidentally, just like being stuck in a swamp, and finally disappear completely in the sand.

  An island that can "walk"

Sable Island not only likes to "eat boats", but also moves. Some geologists believe that the interaction of the Labrador Current and the Gulf Stream continuously pushes the sand and stones on the seabed together to form A huge sandy crescent-shaped dike, and Sable Island is the highest point of this huge dike out of the sea. Because the waters around Sable Island are often turbulent and accompanied by strong winds, the sand on Sable Island is constantly washed from west to east, so the sand on the west coast of the island is constantly being lost, part of it is washed away, and the other part is washed to the east coast of the island—— This cycle continues, making Sable Island seem to "move".

However, this is only the point of view of some geologists, and the answers to these questions still need more evidence to answer.
