Garbage awareness among Belgian citizens

In Belgium, sorting garbage has become a habit in people's daily life. Belgian citizens have a very strong "garbage awareness". It is no exaggeration to say that the awareness of "starting with me and improving the recycling rate of garbage" has melted into the blood of every Belgian citizen.

According to a study published by Yale University and Columbia University in the United States, 92% of Belgian households strictly separate garbage. In terms of household garbage recycling and reuse, Belgium ranks third among developed countries, after Switzerland and Finland. .

The scientific classification of waste is the basis for waste reduction, harmlessness and recycling. Belgium is an early country that implements garbage classification. Garbage is divided into paper, cardboard boxes, plastics, metal packaging, glass, and waste without any recycling value. Garbage bags of different colors are used for different types of garbage, and if they are misplaced, recycling workers will have the right to refuse to take them away. Belgian cities have a series of specific regulations on discarding garbage: for example, glass products must be thrown into the glass recycling bin specially designed for each residential area; small recyclable items such as plastic and metal packaging cans must be placed in blue garbage bags; books Paper such as scrap paper must be placed in yellow garbage bags; large recyclable items such as wooden boards and used electrical appliances must be thrown away at the specified place at the specified time; only those domestic garbage that cannot be recycled can be placed in ordinary white garbage bags Throw it in the garbage dump at any time. Violators will be fined if they do not follow the rules.

There are almost no waste recycling stations in Belgium. Not only is there no payment for recycling waste, but there are additional charges for the disposal of bulky items, and all kinds of garbage of different colors required for ordinary garbage repackaging have to be purchased at their own expense. Belgians have no complaints about paying for garbage bags to dispose of their own garbage. In their view, citizens' actions depend on the cultivation of environmental awareness. No one can remain indifferent to the destruction of the environment on which human beings depend. Therefore, Belgium has done a good job in waste sorting and treatment, second only to Germany in the world.

All highways in Belgium are illuminated with street lights, which is rare in Western countries. Where does this abundance of electricity come from? This has a lot to do with their good use of domestic waste, which can also be used to generate electricity.

In the Iswag waste-to-energy plant on the outskirts of Antwerp, Belgium, waste can not only become the raw material for thermal power generation, but also become a new green energy source. The Iswag waste-to-energy power station was built in the early 1990s and currently processes 120,000 tons of waste annually, and the current directly feeds into the Belgian Electricity Company's grid. Seggs is the first Belgian environmental protection company that is well-known in the world's environmental protection industry, winning with its leading technology and good service. Due to the application of Seggs' environmental protection technology, both waste combustion and waste gas treatment have reached the world's leading level.

In Belgium, the focus of waste disposal is on the packaging of goods. In recent years, in order to increase the added value of commodities, manufacturers have been working hard on packaging without changing the quality of commodities, resulting in a multiplied increase in waste. In view of this, the Belgian government has established two specialized companies dealing with industrial packaging waste and household packaging waste. According to reports, more than 80% of waste packaging is recycled, and its recycling scale ranks among the top in the world.

The sale of large quantities of recycled materials brings the Belgian government about 100 million euros a year. As for the cost of disposing of these garbage, it comes from the members of the two garbage disposal companies. Belgian law stipulates that all companies that generate packaging must join the above two companies according to industrial waste or domestic waste, and pay the corresponding waste treatment fee according to the turnover. Only after becoming a member, the packaging of their products can be used. Print a green dot symbol that symbolizes unified recycling, otherwise the waste will be recycled by the production company itself.
