South Korea reflects on Internet companies' "bullying culture"

The suicide of an employee of Naver, a well-known Internet (IT) company in South Korea, has recently aroused public attention. South Korea’s "Joongang Daily" reported that employee A was found dead near his residence in Seongnam City on May 25. It is reported that the note left by him before his death was suspected to have "excessive work pressure" and so on. The police said that the investigation found that the situation was true.

As the incident unfolded, Naver’s representative Han Chengshu stated in an email to internal employees that the company’s management took the incident very seriously and promised to make positive improvements and make every effort to prevent similar incidents from happening again.

According to reports, IT companies with a large number of young employees seem to be committed to creating a free and creative corporate culture. However, recently in an anonymous community of office workers, there have been many distressed voices from IT company employees. Some people think that this is not the problem of Naver, and they have criticized the overall corporate problems in Korea. In February of this year, an employee of Kakao, another South Korean Internet giant, said that he was suffering from being excluded by his boss and colleagues, which caused a huge controversy for a while.

"Seoul Shimbun" reported that even if you become a so-called "workplace first party", it is difficult to improve the culture of order and order, and this is becoming a stumbling block in combating workplace bullying. In March of this year, the South Korean National Assembly passed an amendment to the Labor Standards Law to impose penalties on workplace bullying, but it is difficult to apply to real situations. Victims may still be labeled as "unsuitable for collectives."

Yonhap News Agency said a survey showed that 32.5% of respondents had experienced workplace bullying in the past year, and nearly 40% of them considered the situation "very serious." However, since the implementation of the Workplace Bullying Prevention Act in 2019, only 2.8% of respondents have reported to the company or related institutions. Among them, more than 71.4% of the people encountered bullying that were not recognized as successful, and 67.9% of the people encountered more severe bullying afterwards.

There is also a dedicated studio for selfies! According to a report from Japan’s Mainichi Shimbun on May 31, 30-year-old photographer Yui Matsumoto opened a selfie shop in Osaka, which is popular with young women for its privacy and safety.

There is no photographer in the selfie room. Customers can use professional photographic equipment to shoot through the remote shutter without worrying about the eyes of others. Selfie houses were very popular in Korea at first. Since February this year, selfie houses have also appeared in Tokyo, Osaka and other places. Matsumoto’s selfie house covers an area of only 40 square meters and is equipped with SLR cameras, lights, display screens, mobile phone holders, background boards and other equipment. Customers can take photos at will without restriction, and the photos will be displayed on the screen immediately after shooting.

Among those who go to the selfie room, 80 are women in their 20s, and most of them are traveling with their girlfriends or boyfriends. Affected by the epidemic, some couples who postponed their weddings, 18-year-old "new adults" in kimonos, etc. also went to the selfie room to take pictures. Many people said: "Have a lot of fun in the selfie room!"

The cost of the selfie room is 3,000 yen (about 174 yuan) for 20 minutes, and consumers can choose 3 of all the photos they take. If an additional 1,000 yen is added, then all the electronic photographs of the selfie can be copied away.
